Finite Element Analysis: greater confidence in your product design

Will your product withstand its intended loads? Is it too flexible, unnecessarily heavy, or vulnerable to repeated use?

At Rota Design, we use Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to investigate how components and assemblies behave under loading. This helps identify potential weaknesses and guide design improvements before committing to tooling and manufacture.

What is Finite Element Analysis?

FEA divides a digital model into smaller elements, creating a mesh. By applying material properties, loads and constraints, we can predict how the design responds to specific conditions.

The analysis can highlight where stresses concentrate, how much a component deforms and which areas may benefit from reinforcement—or a reduction in material.

Answering practical engineering questions

Our analysis work covers plastic products, metal components and mechanical assemblies. Depending on the application, we can investigate:

  • Strength and stiffness: will the design withstand the applied loads, and is its movement acceptable?
  • Buckling: could a slender or thin-walled component become unstable?
  • Temperature effects: how might heating, cooling or thermal expansion affect performance?
  • Dynamic and impact loading: how does the product respond to sudden or changing loads?
  • Fatigue: could repeated loading lead to failure over time?

For polymer products, material behaviour deserves particular attention. Temperature, loading duration and manufacturing variation can all influence performance. A short-term material strength value alone may be insufficient when assessing a product intended to carry a sustained load.

More than a colourful stress plot

Useful analysis starts with understanding the product: how it is manufactured, supported, assembled and used.

Choosing representative material data, realistic loading conditions and appropriate modelling assumptions is essential. We interpret the results in that context, considering both structural performance and practical manufacturing requirements.

Our apprenticeship-trained engineering background helps connect the analysis with workable design changes.

Supporting development and physical testing

FEA can help compare design options, target prototype testing and investigate potential causes of failure. Used early in development, it can reduce avoidable design iterations and help focus investment where it matters most.

Predictions depend on the assumptions and data used. Where appropriate, we recommend physical testing to assess those assumptions and compare measured behaviour with the analysis.

Whether you are developing a new product, improving an existing design or investigating a failure, Rota Design can help you understand its structural performance and make informed decisions.
